Of the one million job openings ahead, 43 per cent will need trades and technical training. The Skills and Training Plan represents fundamental change to how we prepare British Columbians for the jobs of tomorrow.
The Skills and Training Plan is the result of numerous conversations with industry, employers and post-secondary institutions. To find their needs, conversations took place through regional workforce tables, sector-based tables and through one-on-one conversations.
The plan ensures British Columbians can take advantage of the incredible job opportunities today and in the years ahead, and help address the rising shortage of workers.
There are resources and support available to British Columbians to get the skills required to meet our province’s future needs and enjoy a great career in the trades.

Due to BC’s growing economy and continued retirements, in less than a decade there will be one million job openings, with almost half of them in the skilled trades and technical fields. BC’s students are key to helping solve this skills shortage by getting training today for the jobs of tomorrow.
Parents as well as teachers, mentors, coaches and community leaders, can be the greatest influence on a BC child who’s exploring career options or isn’t sure what they want to do after they graduate.
If BC’s apprenticeship system is going to deliver the graduates needed to solve the projected skills shortage, we need employers to sponsor apprentices. The challenge is only one in five employers that hire trades people also sponsor apprentices.
